Paying bills by ACH or check

Schedule payments, choose a payment method, and track when vendors get paid.

Schedule approved bills for payment from your Accountable account. Vendors are paid by ACH bank transfer or by check.

Payment methods

Method Timing Best for
ACH About 1 business day Vendors who've shared bank details
Mailed check Depends on shipping speed, typically 3 to 8 business days by standard mail Vendors who prefer paper checks
Print your own You print it on your schedule Vendors you hand checks to in person

The method used depends on the vendor's payment details on file. See Vendors and onboarding.

Schedule a payment

  1. Go to Payments and open an approved bill.
  2. Choose the Accountable account to pay from.
  3. Confirm the vendor's payment method.
  4. Pick the payment date.
  5. Schedule the payment.

The bill moves to Scheduled until the payment date, then to Payment pending while it processes, and finally Paid.

Make sure the paying account has enough balance on the payment date. You can check balances on the Accounts page.

Check shipping speed

For mailed checks, the recipient's Check Shipping Speed sets how the check is sent:

  • Standard (USPS First Class): arrives in 3 to 8 business days
  • USPS Certified: arrives in 2 to 5 business days, with a mailing receipt
  • 2-Day: arrives in 2 business days, tracked
  • Overnight: arrives next business day, tracked

Tracking a payment

Each bill payment also appears in Transactions. Open it to see:

  • ACH Trace ID for ACH payments, which a vendor's bank can use to locate the deposit
  • Check Number, Check Payment Status, and delivery progress for checks, with an Estimated delivery date

Cancel a payment

If a payment hasn't gone out yet, open it in Transactions and click Cancel Payment, then Yes, Cancel Payment. Cancellation is attempted but not guaranteed once processing has started. For checks that have already been mailed, see Mailed checks, tracking, and voids.

Tip: Ask vendors to complete onboarding with bank details. ACH is faster and easier to track than paper checks.
